Welcome to the blog for Avoiding Cancer One Day At A Time. We look forward to enlightened dialog with you on how the principles of our book can be applied to improve your life.

The information presented in this blog is not a substitute for proper medical care. It is designed to augment information about cancer prevention that you obtain from regular medical checkups and screenings.

This information is based on research and is aimed at preventing and not treating cancers. If you have been diagnosed with cancer, consult a medical provider before observing the nutritional and lifestyle approaches presented here. Some of the nutrients that show promise in helping to prevent cancer could actually render cancer treatment, such as chemotherapy, less effective.

The evidence presented about chemicals that may cause or prevent cancer is imperfect. Studies are being conducted which will provide further information in the next few decades. We will be thrilled if some of the possible carcinogens we list turn out to be completely safe in twenty years.

These practical points may not prevent you from getting cancer. It is our hope that they will suggest ways you can raise the odds in your favor.

All of the examples used as illustrations in this book are fictional or composites of many experiences we've had with patients. Any circumstances that resemble those of our readers are purely coincidental.

Pancreatic Cancer - Get Your Vitamins From Dietary Sources

The June 1st issue of Cancer Research showed that a high dietary intake of vitamin B12, vitamin B6 and folate were associated with a significant reduction in the risk of pancreatic cancer. These reductions were

    vitamin B6 an 81% reduction
    vitamin B12 a 73% reduction
    folate a 57% reduction

On the other side of the equation, those who received these vitamins from a multi-vitamin supplement has a slightly increased risk of pancreatic cancer.

Other studies have shown a protective effect against cancer from dietary nutrients not seen with supplements. It could be that in these cases people are relying upon supplements rather than eating a diet high in fruits and vegetables, but it is a reminder that we need to take time to eat well, rather than depend on a pill.

Good sources of these vitamins include

    vitamin B6
    chick peas (garbanzo beans)
    tuna, halibut
    chestnuts
    potato, sweet potato
    chicken, turkey
    tomato products
    prune juice, bananas
    brussel sprouts, spinach

    vitamin B12
    beef(hormone free)
    fish and shellfish
    soy milk
    enriched cereals

    folate
    long grained white rice
    lentils, pinto beans, chick peas,
    black beans
    orange juice
    spinach

David, Its true you should look to whole food sources rather than "PILLS" as much as possible... However, B-12 along with others is not easily absorbed by our bodies.
Supplements may be the only option.
The older we get the less we get...

      Try this combination:
      Take sublingual B-12 500mcg
      along with B-6 20-50mg
      and Folic Acid 400mcg
      Absorb better thru regular exercise.

Great working with you & Bill W today!

Here is the flax seed tip I mentioned:

Flax contains Cyanogenic glycosides (Also in sweet potatoes & Lima Beans)

They metabolize in our bodies into Thiocyanate. This chemical suppresses your thyroid's ability to take in enough Iodine.
This chain reaction may cause "Goiter".

+Eliminate this by Toasting the seeds+

Buy only Fresh Organic Flax seed. Spread out on a non-teflon cookie sheet and bake center rack at 250 degree oven for 15 minutes till seeds are a little crispy. If oven runs hot lower temp and bake for 20 minutes.
(Over 275 degrees kills Omega 3's)

Flax is VERY unstable. Store in fridge.

Check out ask.com balloons children inhale. Children can die by inhaling a balloon. Usually a child CAN NOT BE SAVED when this happens.
