Pancreatic Cancer - Get Your Vitamins From Dietary Sources

For more information on the connection between vitamins and cancer, see Chapter 8 of Avoiding Cancer One Day At A Time.

The June 1st issue of Cancer Research showed that a high dietary intake of vitamin B12, vitamin B6 and folate were associated with a significant reduction in the risk of pancreatic cancer. These reductions were

vitamin B6 an 81% reduction
vitamin B12 a 73% reduction
folate a 57% reduction

On the other side of the equation, those who received these vitamins from a multi-vitamin supplement has a slightly increased risk of pancreatic cancer.

Other studies have shown a protective effect against cancer from dietary nutrients not seen with supplements. It could be that in these cases people are relying upon supplements rather than eating a diet high in fruits and vegetables, but it is a reminder that we need to take time to eat well, rather than depend on a pill.

Good sources of these vitamins include

vitamin B6
chick peas (garbanzo beans)
tuna, halibut
chestnuts
potato, sweet potato
chicken, turkey
tomato products
prune juice, bananas
brussel sprouts, spinach

vitamin B12
beef(hormone free)
fish and shellfish
soy milk
enriched cereals

folate
long grained white rice
lentils, pinto beans, chick peas,
black beans
orange juice
spinach
