Cancer Prevention: Does Chlorinated Water increase Risk?
The chlorination process has elimated many water-born diseases that Americans now rarely hear of. The question has even been raised about whether or not the chlorination process is responsible for the decline of stomach cancer in the US. Worldwide, the bacteria H. pylori is the leading cause of stomach cancer. H. pylori is felt to be present in roughly 65 percent of well water samples, and chlorination kills the bacteria.
On the other side of the equation, the Silent Spring Study that blanketed the news in May lists chlorinated water as a breast cancer carcinogen in animals.
So how do we reap the benefits while avoiding the risks?
Purchase a water filter for water you use for cooking and drinking. Investing in a pump can provide filtered water to multiple areas of your home, but is expensive to install in existing homes. Consider adding a chlorine filter to your showerhead. Until you purchase a filter, let drinking water stand in an open container in the fridge for 24 hours to eliminate some of the chlorine.
And, maintain perspective. Just as eating non-organic fruits and vegetables is better than skipping them in your diet, drinking chlorinated water is better than skipping water in your diet. Many studies have demonstrated a reduction in cancer risk with higher amounts of water consumption.

chlorine mixed with organics found in all water creates trihalomethanes(THM), known to cause cancer. hospitals stopped using chloroform to sedate people in 1976 because of the cancer and respiratory problems associated with the gas. READ YOUR WATER REPORT!!! CHLOROFORM IS A THM, BUT IT IS UNREGULATED IN WATER... you may want to wear a rubber suit and a mask the next time you take a shower

Dear Adam, are you knowledgeable about the use of a product"ClosysII," a professional grade, patented chlorine dioxide system used for dental hygiene? Thank you for your input. Nancy

Your skin absorbs as much Chlorine in a ten minute shower as your body takes in while drinking 1/2 gal of tap water.
THINK about the warm steamy "Chlorinated Cloud" your lungs inhale during a shower.
Chlorine you take in with teeth brushing and hand washing.
I use a shower filter, drink distilled or R.O water and stay away from swimming pools.
Ironically I soak for 20 minutes my produce in a bath of 1 tsp plain CLOROX BLEACH per gallon of water. Tip: Clorox's chemical make up is Hypoclorite that breaks down into salt. (Or 4oz Hydro Peroxide per gal)

You should always check the water you drink if a chlorine filter is not installed in your water providing system. It may cost some extra dollars, but it will keep you healthy.

Companies that sell water filters often claim that the chlorine in most tap water causes cancer.Scientists say chlorination can produce at least one group of chemical byproducts, trihalomethanes, that are considered carcinogenic. But studies over the years have differed on whether levels of these compounds in tap water adversely affect health. Some studies have found byproducts of chlorination associated with a slight increase in cancer risk, but the findings are disputed by major health organizations.

With or without EPA and the Congress, the transition to a chlorine-free society has begun. For exemple in Europe bans and restrictions on the use of PVC in packaging and public building construction are spreading. Auto companies, appliance">http://www.getgourmetrecipes.com/appliance_parts.html">appliance parts manufacturers, flooring makers and others have also begun phasing out PVC. In the U.S., concerns about high levels of dioxin from medical waste incinerators has quietly shaken the hospital industry. Supply manufacturers are beginning to market products like IV bags made of alternative resins while hospitals are looking at alternative waste treatment methods and ways to substitute durables for disposable items.

How much chlorine in tap water is to much?i have read in some other thread that the treatments with ascorbic acid will completely get rid of any Free Chlorine (FC) you had in the water. Ascorbic acid is a reducing agent while chlorine is an oxidizer so they react. For treating metal, you add "excess" ascorbic acid, but than means the FC will be zero.
