Our next series of topics look at specific recommendations the presidential candidates have put forth to improve health care, lower the risk/improve the treatment of cancer, and increase the health of U.S. citizens in general. We welcome suggestions for further topics. Suggestions can be sent by contacting the authors through our website or making a comment. Questions addressed do not reflect our political opinions, but are chosen to initiate discussion on topics the candidates have addressed and are worthy of further discussion.
Topic #1: FDA Power
From Texas Representative Ron Paul's website. "I oppose legislation that increases the FDA's legal powers. The FDA has consistently failed to protect the public from dangerous drugs, genetically modified foods, dangerous pesticides and other chemicals in the food supply. Meanwhile they waste public funds attacking safe, healthy foods and dietary supplements"

What We Know:
- The estimated cost of problems linked to medication use in the USA exceeded $177 billion in the year 2000.
(Avoiding Cancer One Day At A Time, Beavers Pond Press, 2007)
- The most commonly prescribed antibiotic for a mild vaginal infection, is listed on California's Propostion 65 as
a chemical considered to cause cancer in humans.
- The Environmental Working Group has studies showing that children are overexposed to pesticides even if
the exposure is within legal limits.
- The recent Silent Spring Study, backed by Harvard as well as several other reputable sources, lists 10 food
additives commonly found in grocery products, that have been shown to cause breast cancer in animals.
- And, a personal example. As an adamant reader of food labels with an undergrad degree in chemistry, I recently purchased a loaf of bread with potassium bromate (a food additive) listed under ingredients. If I had purchased this in California, it would have come with a warning label that potassium bromate causes cancer. In most other parts of the world, even though there may have been a language barrier, we would have been safe, since potassium bromate is banned through most of the world...
Question For The Candidates: How should we regulate prescription drugs and food additives demonstrated to cause cancer in humans?
